I just finished this collection of odd holiday tales hand-picked by editor Red Tash, who is no slouch in the talented independent author department her own self.
Each contributing author was challenged to create a new, self-contained Christmas story set in the worlds and characters from their ongoing series. The result is an eclectic collection of tales perfect to read this time of year, but which serves double duty as a sampler of new discoveries you may wish to check out in 2013.
I found many names unfamiliar to me, and I intend to change that. So call it a success in my case. Know going in that the collection skews toward horror and dark urban fantasy, though you'll find plenty of whimsy and sci-fi thrown in. And at least one enjoyable high fantasy tale.
Among my very favorites are the contributions by Red Tash herself and Connie Roberts-Huth with Jessica McHugh's moving period piece the one that hit me hardest. In her contribution, Crazed in Christmas City, we experience Christmas in an insane asylum of the 1950s with a woman who may or may not be as psychotic as the doctors say she is.
Let me be clear, there are no "bad" stories, it's just that the collection paints with a wide brush. Most readers will be drawn toward their favorite styles and less inclined toward others. This is not for those looking for a traditional holiday reader, but readers who want to experience what today's most eclectic writers can do to bring their own unique spin to the holidays. No one plays it safe, and the collection will best appeal to the reader who likes their stories the same way.

The typical Christmas stories can get a little predictable and redundant so it was nice to break from the norm and go back in time, or a fantasy world, or to see Christmas from the dark side. A few stories I was at the edge of my seat, others I repeated to make sure I followed correctly. With an anthology of stories there were times I lost track of what was happening, but not because of the writers it was more from my own state of mind. I would recommend this book to others it keeps you on your toes and raises interest about seeking out these characters in their original books. This was a great concept, hope you create more. =)
Great collection of stories!
Wonderful light-hearted Christmasy stories! Enjoyed reading each of them!
Great book
Odd collection of stories . Did not finish book . Maybe for someone one else .My taste is geared towards more traditional Christmas stories
The real reason I got this book was for the one story,"Believe"by Connie Roberts-Huth. It was a good novella, but with reading the previous two books, I noticed quite a few errors in this novella (listed below), which I had to knock a star off for.
*In book one, the heroine, Zoe, says she is 26, but in this book she is 37. I don't think ~11 years has passed between the first book and this book.
The time frame between the first book and the second book is around a year, the second book in the "What's next in the series" it says 6 months. The math just didn't add up.
*In book one, Zoe, says she's been working with the precinct for 5 years, but in this book she says she has worked with them for 10 years.
*In the novella there is no mention of Jacob, which in book two he was an essential character also, so I was really surprised he wasn't mentioned like Daniel was.
*Once in the novella the girl's name was misspelled "Else" instead of "Eloise".
