18 Seconds A Novel Sherry Moore Novels George D Shuman Books

This is a good novel for a first-time published writer. The premise is enjoyable, if like me, you enjoy the added element of a realistically portrayed super-natural power in pursuit of evil.

However, my expectations were a bit higher based upon the great reviews and Stephen King's testimonial than I thought the book delivered upon. I might have felt differently if I wasn't consistently comparing this to Through Violet Eyeswhich was, in my opinion, just more original and well-written. It's another book with a supernaturally gifted (and, of course exquisitely beautiful and smart) heroine and truly evil foe.

But, this one was a bit confusing in that multiple characters complete with back stories are added in every few pages - and they often prove to be irrelevant and just on-going distractions to the tale. It also seemed, the author couldn't quite decide who to make the main protaganist - the supernaturally gifted Sherry or the over-achieving strong, but vulnerable detective. In the end, the sheer number of characters overwhelmed the tale and made it hard to believe as well in any of them.

BOTTOM LINE: If you like strong woman protaganists, a really evil villian and a different supernatural sort of twist- you'll probably enjoy this one. But, don't expect it to be one of your best reads. (And I'd still recommend one of Woodworth's novels instead.). Still, I look forward to seeing how this author grows.

18 Seconds A Novel Sherry Moore Novels George D Shuman Books Reviews

I initally read the third book in the series, but I had to go back and read the others too.

Sherry Moorre is a blind lady who can see the last 18 seconds of a dead person's life. She has proven useful in finding murderers and other pieces of valuable information. She says she is not a psychic. She had a near death experience and she believes it has to to with the electrical after images that she receives when she holds their hands.

The stories are enhanced with the problems that Sherrie has because of her blindness. But she is not weakling, she knows martial arts and can defend herself handily.

The stories flow quickly and the books are quick reads. Having said that, the author creates characters that are endearing (or horrendous) and you get involved with and care about them.

I am looking foward to the next book.
I love mysteries, and I especially love reading mystery series'. In 18 Seconds I have discovered the most unique series of mystery stories yet. This series, known as the Sherry Moore mystery books, tells about a woman (Sherry) who is blinded by an accident when she is a child. Somehow when this happens she loses her sight, but is given the ability to "remember" the last 18 seconds in a dead person's life. By using this gift, she is able to help law officers solve their cases.

I know, this sounds kind of way out there. But, let me assure you, if you read this book it will be completely believable, as well as being fascinating. I liked 18 Seconds so much I am now in the process of reading another Sherrie Moore book. I fully intend to read the entire series.

Maralee Lowder,
Author of The Mortician's Wife and A Witch's Tale
I enjoyed 18 SECONDS immensely. I liked the way Shuman took a plot element that has been done before and relayed it in a fresh way. I dislike how this book is portrayed as a psychic thriller, psychological thriller, yes, but to call it a psychic thriller degrades it, because it's not really, which is a better angle in my opinion. A blind character in the novel possesses the ability to "see" the last 18 seconds of the person's life, when she makes physical contact. This character is not psychic. She does not communicate with the dead person. She is just able to make an energy-to-energy connection with the short term memory of a corpse. For eighteen seconds, she experiences what the person thought and lived through in the last moments of life. I felt the author did a great job at making that element believable in the story's context.

I also enjoyed the character details, punchy verbs and grittiness. I didn't find anything that dragged momentum.

The only aspect I didn't like was that the two main female characters didn't meet until near the end. I think it would have been great to see them interacting earlier somehow.

The climax of 18 SECONDS was especially gripping. Excellently written fight scenes and final confrontations. I liked that the author didn't hold back any punches and allowed the female characters to experience pain and turmoil.

Fun read for me.
